da heads bet: According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are interested in signing Uruguayan international striker Diego Rolan in a bid to improve the clubs attacking options ahead of the new season.
What’s the Story?
da fezbet: With Newcastle gearing up for the new season, Rafael Benitez is looking to strengthen his attacking options and has his eyes set on Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan, according to reports.
The 24-year-old Uruguayan is thought to be keen on a move to England and would cost around £5million, a bargain considering his £6.8million valuation on Transfermarkt.
How good was Rolan last season?
Inconsistent. While Rolan certainly impressed in patches for Bordeaux during last season, he failed to find a run of form in the team.
This may well be down to the fact that exactly a third of his appearances in all competitions came as a substitute. Still, 10 goals in 22 starts isn’t a bad return for a player who still has a lot of potential.
Would Rolan be a good signing for Newcastle?
It seems as though Rafael Benitez may feel like he is running out of time to find new talent to add to his team. And a move for Diego Rolan certainly seems like a punt, especially for a player who was likely someway down his list of potential targets this summer.
Too often during their spells between the Premier League and Championship have Newcastle gambled on unknown strikers to help them out of trouble.
While it has worked in some instances (Papiss Cisse), it really hasn’t worked in others (Emmanuel Riviere, Yoann Gouffran, Siem De Jong,). Rolan will need to start firing straight away if he is to adhere himself to the demanding crowd at St James’ Park.
