da bet sport: While Tottenham stormed to a 6-0 victory over Millwall at the weekend, the game was not without its negative consequences for Spurs. Just a few minutes into the games, before the goals started flowing, Mauricio Pochettino’s men suffered a huge blow as Harry Kane went off with a suspected ankle injury.

Pochettino later revealed that there were fears that he could be out for a similar timeframe to earlier in the season when he picked up a similar injury. On that occasion, the English forward missed two months of action. Certainly, Kane’s injury will be a pretty major concern for Tottenham, regardless of its duration, but the Lilywhites are more than covered when it comes to replacing the striker.
The first, and perhaps the most immediate option for Pochettino, is to utilise the player who played the hero in Kane’s absence – Son Heung-Min. The South Korean forward bagged an impressive hat-trick against Millwall, and whilst his goals weren’t as crucial as they otherwise have been this season, he still proved that is able to bag goals when called upon.
Indeed, earlier in the season, the attacker was arguably Tottenham’s most important player. Whilst they slumped somewhat at the start of the campaign, it was Son who carried them through, and though he has performed in fits and starts since that point, the quality that he has clearly remains. Though not a natural forward, he is certainly a good option to have – and Pochettino will certainly utilise him at some point.
Another option that could rise to prominence is Vincent Janssen, though it is here that a dilemma clearly awaits. Since moving to London, Janssen has struggled to put his mark on the Premier League, and the striker is yet to score a goal from open play for Tottenham in league football. Having had to settle for goals from set pieces, Janssen has found it hard going so far.
Indeed, with only five Premier League starts under his belt, it is difficult to blame the Dutchman for his lack of form. He was always going to play second fiddle to Harry Kane, but the lack of action that he has had would make it difficult for anybody to get a good run of form going. He cannot be expected to come in and make an impact in the occasional minutes that he has been afforded this season.
Of course, he was able to bag his first goal from open play in a Tottenham shirt over the weekend, albeit in the FA Cup, so could that give him the boost that he needs? He is clearly a player that is lacking in that department, and his 21 goals in 17 games for AZ Alkmaar last season show that he can be deadly when he’s high in confidence. An important goal could be just tonic to kick on and progress. He must recognise that his time to impress is quickly running out, and this could be his last real chance to make a name for himself at White Hart Lane.
If Tottenham’s fears are realised and Harry Kane’s injury is as bad as expected, Pochettino will have to ensure that the circumstances are correctly navigated. In essence, Son Heung-Min offers a fairly recognised and solid option – but the prospect of Vincent Janssen finally reaching his potential and returning to his goalscoring best could be too much to turn down for Pochettino. He must, however, give the Dutchman time to find his feet if he wants to bring the best out of him.
