Manchester United target Memphis Depay could still leave Barcelona before the end of deadline day, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Lowdown: United linked with Depay move
The Red Devils confirmed the big-money signing of Antony from Ajax on Thursday, as their summer transfer window ends on a positive note.
Another player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford is Depay, who spent two underwhelming years at United between 2015 and 2017.
While it has looked as though the player may be stuck in Catalonia until January, a last-gasp update will leave supporters keeping an eye on the situation.
The Latest: Last-gasp update emerges
Taking to Twitter late on deadline day, Romano claims that Depay could yet seal a move away from Barcelona before the 11pm cutoff:
“Keep an eye on Memphis Depay. It’s not over yet — there are talks with his camp working on potential last minute solution. It could be part of domino for Barcelona to sign new player.
“Negotiations ongoing and run against time.”
This comes after reports last week suggested Erik Ten Hag personally wants the Red Devils to get a deal done for the Netherlands star, while reliable reporter Samuel Luckhurst confirmed he could be an option for the club.
The Verdict: Is he needed?
While Depay has improved since his first spell at United, scoring 76 goals in 178 appearances for Lyon, there is now an argument to say that Ten Hag doesn’t need him.
The aforementioned arrival of Antony has given the Red Devils more attacking options, and with Cristiano Ronaldo staying put until January at least, Depay could struggle for regular minutes.
If the transfer does suddenly go through at the eleventh hour it certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing, but it feels as though Antony was the final attacking addition of the summer.
